Helen N. Sowinski

November 20, 1926

May 9, 2023

On Tuesday, May 9, 2023, after living a long and full life. Her generosity, selflessness, and compassion helped strengthen the lives of her family and friends. Helen was born November 20, 1926 to Michael and Sophie Nanek, and was one of five daughters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward A. Sowinski; and all four of her sisters, Julia Pavlosky, Mildred Gerlowski, Lil Kovach, and Mary Triebsch.

Helen grew up in Glendale, PA. She graduated from Scott Township High School, and went to work in Pittsburgh for Aetna Insurance. She retired at age 75 after working for many years at Macy’s in South Hills Village Mall.

She met her husband, Edward at All Saints P.N.C. Church, where she was a lifelong member. After her husband died in 1961, she devoted her life to raising her four children, Cindy Bryan, Judy Alvarez, Nancy Klemash, and Ed Sowinski. She did one heck of a job!

She is survived by her four children; their spouses, Pat Bryan, Dave Alvarez, Paul Klemash and Maryanne Sowinski. Six grandchildren, Nikki Bryan (Ben Pegher), Andrew Klemash (Mary Beth), Rachel Hanley (Josh), Raymond Sowinski (Rachel), Monica Dohrn (Jake), and Luke Sowinski (Addie Gardner); and two great-grandchildren, Boone Pegher and Ada Jane Sowinski.

We remember her feeding seagulls on the beach, telling us how to cut the grass, making donuts, Pierogi day, wishing us a fertile New Year at Christmas, saying “that’s different” when she didn’t like something, and most of all, smiling at us all.

“Do Widzenia”
