On Wednesday, November 20, 2024. Son of the late Hugh Wallace and Hazel B. Campbell; husband of the late Dorothy A. "Dottie" Campbell; beloved father of Donald (Suzanne) Campbell and Patty (Ron) Yardas; proud Grandpap of Zachary Campbell, Nicholas (Kelly) Campbell, Courtney Campbell, Cody (Fiance Megan) Campbell, Jennifer Yardas, and Ron Yardas; great-grandpap of Alex and Liv Campbell; brother of Joy Lee (Rich) Snatchko and the late Jim (late Joan), Bud (late Vi), and Larry Dean (Karol) Campbell; also survived by generations of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many good friends.
Donald F. Campbell, Sr. was born August 22, 1935 in Midway, PA. At a young age he enjoyed being outdoors and being with family. On November 8, 1958 he married Dorothy A. Beck and they moved to Kentucky, where Don was stationed in the Army, based out of Fort Knox, and was a driver for the Battalion Commander.
After his time at Fort Knox, they returned home and lived in Oakdale, and Don was in the Army Reserves. Don worked as a truck driver for Acme Clay Products. They had two children, Don, Jr. and Patty. Eventually he secured a sales position for Acme Clay, he continued in sales until he retired in 2000, but he continued to work as a starter at Scenic Valley Golf Course in Venetia, PA.
He was a member of the Washington County Home Builders Association. In 1965 Don and Dorothy moved to Scott Township, where they raised their family and lived for 50 years. They were long-time active members of SS. Simon & Jude parish, where he was a money counter and usher, and coach for SSJ school teams. Don enjoyed playing cards, camping, hunting, coaching his children’s sports, golfing and playing the drums. He was a family man who loved life and was always the life of the party. He was blessed to be able to watch his grandchildren and eventually great-grandchildren play sports!
Don and Dorothy were snowbirds and would stay at Rambler’s Rest in Venice, Florida, where they were very active and had many new friends. Don also became a clown by the name of Sawhill, which was his mother’s maiden name. His clown group would visit nursing homes to “clown around” and entertain the residents. Don also appreciated the annual Campbell Family Reunion and getting to visit with his extended family.
In 2015, Don and Dorothy downsized to Cloverleaf Estates, where they were involved in many community activities. In March of 2023, Don moved to Peters Township Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Facility, where he was the unofficial Hall Monitor, and would ask everyone who passed him, “Where you from?” He will be missed by all the lives he touched.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the SZAFRANSKI-EBERLEIN FUNERAL HOME, INC., where family and friends will be received on Sunday, December 1, 2024, from 2-6pm at 101 Third St., Carnegie.
